Change Through Children
Academy for Educational Development

Giving children the healthiest start.

Almost 11 million children in developing countries die each year before their 5th birthday. More than six million of these deaths could be prevented. Infant and child mortality could be reduced by 60% with simple, proven interventions: exclusive breastfeeding, adequate diets, vitamin A, immunizations and insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent malaria. AED operates multimillion-dollar programs worldwide that target each of these areas.

Because malnutrition is a major underlying cause of death among very young children, we’ve created an advocacy tool used by senior government policymakers in 20 countries to identify priorities for nutrition policy reforms. We’d like to expand to 20 more countries that are confronting severe nutrition problems.

By keeping children alive and healthy past the age of five, we will accomplish the first step in ensuring they have a chance to grow up and create a better future.

Examples of what you can do:

A donation of $10 will provide an insecticide treated bednet for a poor family unable to afford one.

A donation of $50 will provide an essential birthing kit and antenatal care package to a new mothers for nutrition, breastfeeding, malaria prevention and general health information.

A donation of $40,000 will provide 10,000 pregnant women and mothers of children under age 5 with individual discount vouchers (worth about $4.00 each) for an insecticide-treated bed net to prevent malaria.

A donation of $50,000 will support a year of radio broadcasts to remote areas, telling families about steps they can take to save their children from the major killers—even when they do not have access to regular health services.

A donation of $800,000 will expand our advocacy program to 20 other developing countries, helping them to identify priorities and target money where it can have the greatest impact on child nutrition— potentially saving tens of thousands of children’s lives.
