Change Through Children

Stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Over 800,000 children were infected with HIV in 2002, mostly due to transmission from mother to child. More than 13 million children have been orphaned by AIDS. By 2010, the number of AIDS orphans is expected to reach 20 million—the entire population of New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

There is something we can do. It is not out of our hands. We have been pioneering programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. We created one of the first programs that focuses on the caregivers of AIDS orphans under age five and gives them the support they need. We want to bring this program (begun in Kenya) to five other countries where the need is greatest.

AED is also a leader in fighting HIV/AIDS by working in schools with girls’ clubs and with district education officials to empower girls and boys to stay healthy. In much of Africa, young, uneducated girls have the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection. One of our targets now is to work in all 110 school districts in Ghana.

Examples of what you can do:

A donation of $12 will provide an HIV test to a pregnant mother.

A donation of $100 will provide dependent care, schooling and basic healthcare for one orphan for one year in Kenya. Learn More about AED's Orphan Support Pack.

A donation of $25,000 will support the formation of People Living With HIV/AIDS associations and networks in a country for one year.

A donation of $100,000 provides the training of 10,000 health care workers to promote the treatment of Nevirapine to help prevent mother to child transmission of HIV from positive mothers.
